Railcard 16-25: Descuentos en tren y en metro / Discounts in the train and tube.

¿Qué es la Railcard?

La "Railcard 16-25" es una tarjeta con la cual obtendrás descuentos en el tren y en el metro.

What is the Railcard?

The Railcard 16-25 is a card and you can obtain some discounts with it in the train and the tube.

Requisitos:

Para poder solicitar la Railcard debes tener entre 16-25 años o ser estudiante a tiempo completo.

• Da igual que acabes de cumplir 25 años, puedes pedir la "Railcard" y te durará hasta la fecha de caducidad que pondrá en el carnet (dura un año desde que la pides).
• Se considera que eres un estudiante a tiempo completo cuando estás matriculado de un mínimo de 15 horas de clases presenciales a la semana y con una duración mínima de 20 semanas al año.
• Da igual tu nacionalidad.
  

 

Requirements:

If you want to request the Railcard you must be 16-25 years old or being a full-time student.

• It doesn't matter if you are already 25 years, you can ask the Railcard and it will be valid until the expire date printed on your card (since you ask the card it's valid one year).
• You are a full-time student when you go to 15 hours of face lessons in a week and at least it has to be 20 weeks in a year.
• It doesn't matter your nationality.
  
  
   

Precio:

El precio que tendrás que pagar por esta tarjeta se acabará compensando a lo largo del año, ya que tanto el billete de tren como el de metro te saldrán un 33% más baratos.

Tienes varias opciones a la hora de comprarlo, puedes:

• Comprarla para un año por 30 libras.
• O comprarla para tres años por 70 libras.

Y además, lo que yo suelo hacer a la hora de comprarla es buscar un "Promotional code" para Railcard en Google, de esta forma te saldrá muchísimo más barato. 

Como por ejemplo la siguiente imagen que encontré en "esta web". Con este cupón obtienes un 10% de descuento al comprar la Railcard. Debes tener en cuenta que cada semana van saliendo nuevos códigos y los anteriores van caducando (así que este código que te pongo aquí no te valdrá ahora). Cuando yo renové mi Railcard pude conseguir uno con un 25% de descuento, así que todo es cuestión de ir mirando.

Price:

The price that you have to pay for this card it will be offset during the year, because the train and tube tickets will be a 33% cheaper.

You have different options to buy it:

• 1 year for 30 pounds.
• 3 years for 70 pounds.

When I bought this card I searched a promotional code for Railcard in Google, so it's much cheaper.

For example, this image it's a promotional code that I found it in "this website". With this code you have a discount of 10% when you buy your Railcard. You need to have in mind that every week there are new codes and the old ones are expired (so this code it doesn't work now). When I renewed my Railcard I could have a discount of 25 %.

 

¿Dónde comprarla?

Puedes hacerlo presencialmente en cualquier estación de tren (excepto la de Heathrow) o de forma online a través de "esta web".

La ventaja de hacerlo presencialmente es que te la dan al momento y puedes empezar a usarla desde ese mismo instante, pero si quieres que te salga más barato con un "Promotional code" tendrás que hacerlo online y en 5 días tendrás tu tarjeta en casa.

Where can I buy it?

You can do it in person in any train station (except in Heathrow) or online by "this website". 

The advantange if yo do it in person is that you will have your Railcard at the moment, so you can use it that day, but if you want to buy it cheaper with a promotional code you will have to do it online and you will have the card in five days at home.

Documentos necesarios:

Para poder comprar la Railcard deberás presentar los siguientes documentos:

• DNI o pasaporte.
• Una foto tamaño carnet.
• Formulario rellenado (este formulario te lo facilitarán en la misma estación).
  

Requested documents:

You need the next documents to buy the Railcard:

• ID or passport.
• Passport size photo.
• Application form (you can ask it in the same station).
  

¿Cómo se utiliza?

• TREN: A la hora de comprar un billete de tren deberás indicar que posees una Railcard 16-25 para que se te aplique el descuento; no te pedirá ningún dato, así que deberás llevar la tarjeta contigo durante todo el viaje, por si acaso pase un revisor.

• METRO: Para poder obtener el descuento del 33% deberás enseñar la Railcard cuando compras un Travelcard de cartón o si usas la Oyster deberás tenerla registrada. Si no la tienes registrada, en las estaciones de metro suele haber folletos que tienes que rellenar y presentar en ventanilla; cuando hagas esto tendrás que decirle que quieres asociar tu Railcard 16-25 con tu Oyster; y ya podrás usar tu Oyster como hasta ahora has hecho, llevando siempre encima tu Railcard.

How does it work?

• TRAIN: When you buy a train ticket you must put that you have a Railcard 16-25 if you want to have the discount; they won't ask any information, so you must have your card with you during the trip.
• TUBE: If you want to have the discount of 33% you should show your Railcard when you buy a Travelcard (in paper) or if you use the Oyster you must have registered it. If you don't have your Oyster registered, you can do it in the tube stations; you have to take a leaflet and write down, later you have to take it to the ticket office and tell him you want to associate your Oyster with your Railcard 16-25, and now you can use your Oyster like always, but you must have your Railcard with you.

Limitaciones:

• Son intransferibles, sólo puede utilizarla la persona que la compró.

• TREN: El descuento es válido para todos los trayectos en tren, con la siguiente excepción: en trayectos de tren realizados entre las 04.30-10.00 de Lunes a Viernes, el coste final, una vez aplicado el descuento, nunca podrá ser inferior a 12 libras.

• METRO: Para los viajes en metro hay más restricciones, sólo obtendrás descuento en los siguientes casos:

            - Viajes individuales con la Oyster en horario off-peak. 

            - Travelcards diarios en cartón en horario off-peak.

           

            - En el Price Cap Diario con la Oyster en horario off-peak.

El horario "off-peak" de viajes individuales con la Oyster es de Lunes a Viernes de 09.30-16.00 y a partir de las 19.00, mientras que los Sábados, Domingos y festivos es a cualquier hora del día. En cambio, el horario "off-peak de los Travelcards diarios y del Price Cap Diario es desde las 09.30 de Lunes a Viernes y a cualquier hora los Sábados, Domingos y festivos.

En ambos casos a nosotros nos beneficia porque cuando solemos ir a Londres es durante los fines de semana, por lo que tenemos el descuento del 33%.

El "Price Cap" es el máximo de libras que puedes gastar en un día. Por ejemplo, en zona 1 lo máximo que puedes gastar en un día con la Oyster es 7 libras; cuando llegas a esta cantidad podrás seguir cogiendo el metro que no te cobrará más. ¡Pues con la Railcard asociada a la Oyster esta cantidad máxima sería de 4,60 libras!.

Limitations:

• The cards are untransferable, the person who buys it is the only person who can use it.

• TRAIN: The discount is valid for all the journeys by train with the next exception: in train journeys between 04.30-10.00 from Monday to Friday, the final cost (with incluided discount) won't be less than 12 pounds.
• TUBE: If you are travelling by tube there are more restrictions, you only have the discount in these cases: 

               - Individual journeys with the Oyster in off-peak time.              
               - Diary Travelcards (in paper) in off-peak time.

               - Price Cap Diary with the Oyster in off-peak time.

The "off-peak" time for individual journeys with the Oyster is from Monday to Friday between 09.30-16.00 and later than 19.00, while the Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays it's all the day. However, the off-peak time for Diary Travelcards (in paper) and the Price Cap Diary is since 09.30 from Monday to Friday and the Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays it's all the day.

In both cases it's good for us because when we go to London is during the weekends, so we always have the discount of 33%.

The "Price Cap" is the maximum amount of pounds you can spend in one day. For example, in zone 1 you can spend 7 pounds maximum with the Oyster; when you have spent 7 pounds you can take the tube but you won't spend more money. And if you have the Railcard associated with the Oyster that amount it would be 4,60 pounds!

¿La recomendarías?

Sin duda alguna la recomendaría, por lo menos en nuestro caso que solemos ir una vez al mes a Londres solemos amortizarla. El máximo del día me suele salir en torno a las 5 libras (vamos hasta la zona 6) mientras que lo normal es que sean unas 9 libras, por lo que se nota muchísimo la diferencia.

Do you recommend it?

With no doubt I would recommend it. We usually go to London once per month and I think it's worth. The maximum amount which I usually spend is about 5 pounds (incluided the zone 6) while the normal spending is about 9 pounds, so you can notice the difference.

¿Cómo hacer amigos? / How can I make friends?

Muchas veces he recibido comentarios de chicas que acaban de llegar a Inglaterra y que viven a más de una hora de donde nosotros vivimos para quedar algún día y, por mucho que se quiera, un trayecto de una hora es mucho para quedar a tomar algo en un pub.

Cuando eres au pair llegas a un nuevo sitio y al principio sólo te relacionas con la familia, y a no ser que tengas suerte y te presenten a los amigos de la anterior au pair, al principio puedes estar encerrada en casa sin conocer a gente. Si tu caso es como el nuestro y eres una au pair couple no importa tanto porque siempre tienes el apoyo de tu pareja, pero si eres una au pair normal sentirás la necesidad de conocer gente desde el primer día que pisas este país.

Así que con esta entrada me he propuesto enumerar los distintos medios que podemos utilizar para conocer a gente con la que relacionarse:

Many times I have received comments of girls who have just arrived in England and they live in cities which are more than one hour from our home. They want to meet us, but it's quite difficult when you live so far away.

When you are an au pair, you arrive at new place and in the first moments you are only with the family, but maybe you are lucky and they introduce you to the previous au pair's friends, but if it's not in this way maybe you will be bored in your room. If you are an au pair couple it's pretty easier because you always have your partner with you, but if you are a normal au pair you will have the necessity of meeting people since the first day.

So with this post I will tell you the different ways we can use to meet people when you are an au pair:

1. Clases de Inglés

Si tienes suerte de llegar en Septiembre o en Enero te coincidirá con el inicio de las clases de inglés (por lo menos en la mayoría de los colleges) y allí conocerás a mucha gente que está en la misma situación que tú. De hecho así conocimos a nuestras primeras amigas aquí, a Martina y Anabel, que las conocimos cuando estábamos haciendo la cola para pagar el curso.

Una vez empezaron las clases fuimos conociendo a más gente. Algunos vivirán más cerca, otros más lejos, pero seguro que alguna buena amistad harás.

1. English lessons:

If you are lucky and you arrive in September or January the most english lessons are starting and there you can meet many people in the same situation than you. In fact we met our first friends, Martina and Anabel, in the college.

Once the lessons have started we met more people. Some people will live near to you, other further, but I'm sure you will make a good friendship.

2. Grupos o páginas del Facebook

No sé como lo haría antes la gente cuando no existía Internet, pero ahora es muy fácil conocer a gente a través de las páginas o grupos del Facebook, de hecho, así es como más hemos conocido a nuestras amigas que viven cerca de nosotros. 

El truco es introducir en el cuadro de búsqueda "Au pair", "Foreign people", "Españoles"... seguidos del nombre de tu pueblo o ciudad. Puede ocurrir que tu ciudad sea muy pequeña y no encuentres nada, entonces tendrás que intentarlo con ciudades que sean un poco más grandes y que estén cerca de ti. Y cuando encuentres algún grupo te irán apareciendo otros similares en la barra de la derecha y quizás encuentres alguno que te convenga más.

Una vez seas admitida en el grupo escribe un mensaje presentándote, diciendo dónde vives y que te gustaría quedar para conocer gente... ya verás como muchos te dirán algún lugar y sitio para quedar.

A continuación dejaré algunos de los grupos de las ciudades cercanas a donde nosotros vivimos por si acaso vengas a esta zona de Essex.

2. Facebook groups or pages:

I don't know how the people could do it when Internet didn't exist, but now it's much easier meeting friends by the Facebook groups or pages. In fact we have met our friends who live near to us by this way.

The thing is to put in the search box: "Au pair", "Foreign people", "Spanish"... followed by the name of your village or city. Maybe your village is too small and you don't find anything, so you should try again with the name of bigger cities near to you. When you find one group you will have more groups similar to this one on the right side, and maybe you will find one that is better for you.

When you are admitted in the group I recommend you introducing yourself, telling where you live and you would like to meet them... You will see that most people tell you a place where meeting.

3. Anterior au pair

Si has tenido la oportunidad de hablar con la anterior au pair, lo mejor es que le preguntes si conoce a gente y si te puede dejar algún teléfono para poder contactarlos. 

Nuestro error fue no preguntar esto; en ese momento no lo pensamos, pero a las tres semanas después de estar aquí fue cuando conocimos a Martina, Monika... y todas ellas eran amigas de la anterior pareja.

3. Previous au pair

If you had the chance to speak with the previous au pair, the best way to meet people is asking her about her friends and if it would be possible that she let you the phone number of someone, so you can meet them when you arrive.

Our mistake was that we didn't ask it; we didn't think it but three weeks later when we arrived we met Martina, Monika... the same friends of the previous au pairs.

4. Couchsurfing

La mayoría de ustedes conocerán "Couchsurfing", es una página donde puedes conseguir alojamiento gratis en casas de otras personas como intercambio cultural, pero también es utilizada para conocer gente y hacer quedadas. Nosotros no lo hemos usado porque la ciudad más cercana que reconoce es Londres pero quizás ustedes tengan más suerte.

4. Couchsurfing

Most people knows about "Couchsurfing" which is a website where you can have a free bed at other people's homes, so there is a cultural exchange, but this website is used to meet people as well. We haven't used it because the recognised nearest city is London, but maybe you are luckier.

5. Spaniards

"Spaniards" es una web donde hablan españoles que se encuentran en distintas partes del mundo. Dentro del apartado "Foros" hay un subapartado que se llama "Au pair" y ahí podréis encontrar a otras au pairs que están deseando conocer gente.

"Spaniards" is a website where spanish people talk about different topics. If you click in "forums" there is other option called "Au pair" and there you can find other au pairs who are wishing to meet people.

¡Un año en Inglaterra! / One year in England!

Justamente hoy hace un año que nos aventuramos y vinimos a Inglaterra viviendo una de las grandes experiencias de nuestras vidas. Hemos aprendido, aprendido a ser independientes, a defendernos en otro idioma, a convivir juntos, a adaptarnos a otras costumbres, a ser responsables, a no rendirnos ante las dificultades, a disfrutar de cada instante, de cada nuevo paisaje, a valorar nuestro país como nunca antes lo habíamos hecho... En definitiva, una experiencia única que se la recomiendo a todo aquél que esté leyendo esto.

Como no hay palabras que puedan resumir este año aquí les dejo un vídeo con todos los instantes que hemos vivido:

      

 

Today it has been one year since we arrived in England living one of the biggest experiences of our lifes. We have learnt to be independent, to manage other language, to live together, to adapt to other mores, to be responsibles, to not surrender to the difficulties, to enjoy every moment, every landscape, to appraise our country as we never did before.... Definitely, a unique experience that I recommend you.
