¿Couple? ¿Irme con mi pareja como au pair?

Poco a poco fui mirando en Internet, informándome sobre lo que significaba ser una au pair, cómo conseguir una familia, los documentos que tendría que obtener... Mi novio y yo queríamos ir juntos, por lo que tendríamos que intentar que ambas familias estuviesen en el mismo pueblo/ciudad, algo complicado pero no imposible.

Pero un día me dio por buscar au pair novios/pareja en google y vi que existían los "au pair couple", a la misma vez me percaté de lo difícil que sería encontrar una familia que quisiera a dos personas. Normalmente estas familias suelen tener casas grandes con jardines y muchos niños. La chica suele encargarse del cuidado de los niños y de la casa, y el chico más del jardín y de mantenimiento.

Couple? Going with my partner as an au pair couple?

Many day I was looking in Internet, finding out about being an au pair, how to have a host family, the needed documents... My boyfriend and I wanted to go together, so we had to try that the host families lived in the same village/city, it was something complicated but not impossible.

But one day I searched "au pair partner/couple" in google and I found out there are au pair couples, at the same time I realised that it was so difficult to find a family who wanted two people. The families usually have big houses with gardens and lots of children. The girl works with the children and cleans the house, and the boy works in the garden and DIY.

¿Cómo conseguir una familia?

Hay dos métodos: puedes buscar tú mismo en internet, con el riesgo de encontrarte numerosas estafas o familias indeseadas o también puedes optar a pagar a una agencia que busque una familia por ti.

Mucha gente dice que no pagarían a una agencia por un trabajo que pueden hacer ellos mismos, en parte estoy de acuerdo, pero nosotros decidimos hacerlo por agencia ya que para una au pair couple es más dificil encontrar familia y porque si tienes cualquier problema una vez estés en tu destino la agencia lo solucionaría. Prefiero gastarme 290 euros ahora que verme en la calle en Inglaterra, sin saber a donde ir.

De todas formas tienes que tener en cuenta que no suelen haber familias que busquen una pareja en las páginas de internet (es muy raro y muy probablemente sea una estafa). Ya que las familias que suelen necesitar a dos personas suelen ser adineradas y obviamente prefieren contratar a una agencia que les haga la búsqueda.

El inconveniente es que son muy pocas las agencias que aceptan au pair couple, así que buscando y comparando precios finalmente nos decantamos por "Spanishaupairs" (http://www.spanishaupairs.com/), que nos ofrecía un precio más económico que las otras agencias. Normalmente suelen pedirte unos 300-400 euros.

Con esta agencia tienes que pagar 90 euros cuando entregas los papeles y cuando ya tienes familia los 200 euros restantes (290 euros cada uno).

Nuestra experiencia con la agencia fue muy positiva, tardaron varios meses en encontrarnos la primera familia (pero ellos ya te avisan de que es un proceso largo y no inmediato) y siempre estuvieron atentos a nosotros.

How can we have a family?

There are two options: you can search in internet by yourself, with the risk of finding some scams or bad families or you can do it by agency.

Many people tell that they don't pay for an agency if they can do it by internet. I agree with them, but for an au pair couple it's more difficult and we did it by agency. Furthermore if you have any problem with the family, the agency will try to solve it. I prefer to spend 290 euros now than later in England.

Anyway you need to have in mind that there aren't many families who want an au pair couple by internet (it's really weird and it would be a scam). The families who need two people use to be rich families and obviously they prefer to do it by agency.

The disadvantage is that there are few agencys which offer jobs for an au pair couple, so we were searching and comparing the different prices and finally we chose the agency called "Spanishaupairs" (http://www.spanishaupairs.com/), because they offered the lowest price. The agencys usually cost 300-400 euros.

With this agency you had to pay 90 euros when you sent the documents and you had to pay the remaining 200 euros when you had the family.

Our experience with the agency was possitive, they found the first family some months later (but they have notificated us that it's a long proccess) and they were always pendients of us.

(Actualizado el 26/01/14: Como la demanda de solicitudes ha aumentado, ahora piden que tengas un nivel B1 de inglés y han subido muchísimo el precio, ahora cada uno tiene que pagar al principio 90 euros y cuando ya tienes la familia unos 400 euros).

Au pair ¿por qué no? / Au pair, why not?

Hola! Me llamo Esther, soy una chica canaria de 24 años, el año pasado acabé la licenciatura de farmacia y en Agosto empiezo una nueva aventura en mi vida, me voy de au pair couple con mi novio Mikel, que es de Gipuzkoa, tiene 27 años y es Maestro de Educación Física.

Empiezo este blog con la intención de ayudar a las personas que estén en nuestra misma situación.

Normalmente llevaré yo el blog, aunque algunas de las entradas estarán escritas por Mikel.

Todo comenzó al estar acabando ambos la carrera, las perspectivas de un futuro trabajo en España no eran muy buenas así que decidimos irnos a Inglaterra.

Pero ¿Cómo? ¿En qué trabajaríamos? Con un nivel de inglés básico (aunque él tiene mayor nivel que yo) no iba a ser muy fácil esta aventura. Siendo realistas teníamos tres opciones para trabajar donde no pidieran un gran nivel de inglés:

• Kitchen porter. Este trabajo consiste en lavar platos, vasos... en distintas cafeterías o pubs. Para poder elegir esta opción debes tener un buen colchón económico pues con este trabajo no ganas mucho dinero y tienes que pagarte el piso, la comida, las facturas, etc.

• Hotel: Podíamos ir a un hotel donde trabajas y te dan alojamiento y las comidas. Si vas sólo yo lo veo como una de las mejores opciones ya que cobras bien para el poco nivel de inglés que tienes y no tienes que preocuparte por el alojamiento y las comidas. ¿Por qué no elegimos esta opción? Porque apenas tendríamos tiempo libre y podría tocarnos en lugares alejados.
  
• Au pair: Finalmente nos decidimos por ser au pair, ya que a cambio de cuidar a unos niños y hacer algunas tareas del hogar te dan alojamiento y comida. Así podemos ir también a clases de inglés y aprender mucho más rápido.

Hi! My name is Esther, I am from Canary Islands (Spain) and I am 24 years old. The last year I finished the Pharmacist degree and in August I am starting a new life adventure, I will be an au pair couple with my boyfriend Mikel, he is from Gipuzkoa (Spain), 27 years old and he is a P.E. teacher.

I am starting this blog with the intention of helping to other people who is in the same situation than us. I will usually write in the blog, but sometimes Mikel will do it.

Everything started when we finished our degrees, the perspectives of a future job in Spain weren't so good so we decided to go to England.

But... How? Which work will we have? With a basic english level (although his english is better than mine) it won't be easy this adventure. If we were realistics we had three different options to work with a basic english level:

• Kitchen porter: This job consists on washing dishes, glasses... in different coffee shops or pubs. You will need money for the first moments because you won't earn enough money and you will have to pay the house, food, bills, etc.
  
  
• Hotel: Other option it was going to a hotel where you can live and work. If you are going to England by yourself I think that this one is the best option, you will earn enough money with your english level and you don't have to be worried about the bills, food... Why don't we choose this option? Because we won't have enough free time and we could be separated.
  
• Au pair: So we decided to be an au pair. You will have to look after some children and doing some houseworks and they will give you a bedroom, food and pocket money. So we can go to English lessons and learning quicklier.
