Despedida / Farewell

First of all, I'm really sorry for having left the blog without saying anything. Actually that wasn't my intention, but we had 4 months where the Internet didn't work well and also I wasn't in the mood of writing, so I decided to leave the blog.

Therefore I won't write anymore here but I'll let the blog open (and the facebook page), so all the people who want to follow our steps can read our experience.

If you are curious about these last four months, it hasn't been so interesting, only when a friend of mine came a few days and our holidays in Easter (the two weeks after Easter because the family went to Malta, so we had to look after the dogs). We had two weeks of holidays, one week we went to Iceland with another au pair and the other week each one went to their home. (Here you have some pictures of the Iceland trip, so you can see the amazing landscapes).

¡Muchas gracias por haber seguido el blog!

Thank you so much for following the blog!

Entrevista / Interview

Do you know the blog "La maleta de una Au Pair"? It's a very impressive blog which is written by Erika, a Spanish girl who was working as an au pair in the USA for one year (we left Spain the same week to work as an au pair and since then, we have been blogger's mates).

Today I am talking about this blog because the other day Erika interviewed us and you can read it in "this link". Her blog is written in Spanish, but you can translate it.

Ahora también en Inglés!! / Now also in English!!

Hola!

Hi! Today I'm here to tell you that I have decided to write the blog in Spanish and in English, so more people can read it and I can improve the English. The translations won't be exactly the same and I will make lots of mistakes, but that is the thing, isn't it? I will improve it gradually :)

The new posts will be in both languages and I will change the other ones when I have time to do it.

¡¡Buenas noticias!! / Good news!!!

This post will be very short but it's also very exciting, the thing is that...

We will stay here one year more!!

Our contract finishes in August, but the other day I was talking to our HM about the Summer holidays and she asked me what we were going to do, if we think that our English was enough for working in other thing. In that moment I was shocked because it was supposed that Mikel and I wanted to tell her this decision (As you know, we want to stay one year more here as an au pair couple, because it's the best option if we want to continue learning English: a house for us without sharing it, a car, all the food and bills paid and we have pocket money!). So I told her we would like to stay one year more with them (we want to take the CAE exam in June), and she said "yes", for them it's much better, they need an au pair couple one year more and she is very happy with us! =)=)

¿Cómo ser au pair couple? / How to be an au pair couple?

Lot of people have asked us weekly how we managed to be an au pair couple. I have talked about this topic in the posts before coming to England, but I will try to resume it.

First of all, you need to have in mind that if you want to come as an au pair couple, you need to know that this job isn't like a normal au pair. The girl will work more with the chidren and doing houseworks and the boy will have hard work, like gardenig (it doesn't matter if it's raining or it's 1-2 degrees, if it's windy...), DIY and driving for the HF. The family use to offer the house (usually it's a small cottage near to their home), the food, the bills, a car (it depends on the family) and weekly pocket money (it will be 60-90 pounds, it depends on the timetable). If you want to have an idea about that, in this post "Nuestra familia/Our Host Family", I explain our conditions.

Furthermore, you need to have in mind that for now I have only seen that you can be an au pair couple in Europe (I don't know if there is a possibility in other country).

In our case we managed to be an au pair couple by agency, because finding a host family who wants two people is really difficult, because they use to be rich people and they prefer to have an agency to do it.

One thing you need to have in mind is that if you will do it by websites, you need to be careful because it's easy to find some scams. If the conditions are amazing, they offer you a large amount of money (the normal pocket money is 60-90 pounds in a week) or you have to pay before going, don't trust! The most known and reliable website to be an au pair in Europe (although there are also some scams) is Au Pair World (http://www.aupair-world.es). Another one is Gumtree (http://www.gumtree.com/).

But as I said, if your intention is going as an au pair couple, the best option is to do it by agency. I only know two agencies who offer jobs as an au pair couple (if you know more, please tell me):

We came to England by this agency. When we did it they asked a basic english level and 290 euros each one; but now they have changed the conditions because there are so much enrolments. Now they ask you a B1 level of English and 490 euros each one.

Our experience with them was very good. They tried to solve our doubts and they found us a family three months later (you need to have in mind that if you want to be an au pair couple you have to wait some months because there aren't enough families.

If you are interested in this agency, here you have the website, the blog and the phone number:

This agency is very useful if you are in England (you can do it from your country as well). This agency is where the English host families are registered (we contacted with two families who have registered by this agency) . But I don't know how much you have to pay, but it's really expensive for the families (823 euros if they want an au pair couple).

I have to tell you that I only know a few au pair couple:

So as I said you need to be patient because there aren't enough families.

If I know a host family who needs an au pair couple I will put it in the blog, but please don't ask me more if I know a family, I will put it in the blog clearly.

Pareja au pair / Au pair couple

¿Couple?

********

Couple? Going with my partner as an au pair couple?

Many day I was looking in Internet, finding out about being an au pair, how to have a host family, the needed documents... My boyfriend and I wanted to go together, so we had to try that the host families lived in the same village/city, it was something complicated but not impossible.

But one day I searched "au pair partner/couple" in google and I found out there are au pair couples, at the same time I realised that it was so difficult to find a family who wanted two people. The families usually have big houses with gardens and lots of children. The girl works with the children and cleans the house, and the boy works in the garden and DIY.

********

********

How can we have a family?

There are two options: you can search in internet by yourself, with the risk of finding some scams or bad families or you can do it by agency.

Many people tell that they don't pay for an agency if they can do it by internet. I agree with them, but for an au pair couple it's more difficult and we did it by agency. Furthermore if you have any problem with the family, the agency will try to solve it. I prefer to spend 290 euros now than later in England.

Anyway you need to have in mind that there aren't many families who want an au pair couple by internet (it's really weird and it would be a scam). The families who need two people use to be rich families and obviously they prefer to do it by agency.

The disadvantage is that there are few agencys which offer jobs for an au pair couple, so we were searching and comparing the different prices and finally we chose the agency called "Spanishaupairs" (http://www.spanishaupairs.com/), because they offered the lowest price. The agencys usually cost 300-400 euros.
With this agency you had to pay 90 euros when you sent the documents and you had to pay the remaining 200 euros when you had the family.

Our experience with the agency was possitive, they found the first family some months later (but they have notificated us that it's a long proccess) and they were always pendients of us.

********

(Update on 26/01/14: As now there are lots of enrolments, they ask you to have the B1 level of English and the price has risen, now each one has to pay 90 euros in the first moment and later 400 euros).

Au pair ¿por qué no? / Au pair, why not?

Hola!

Hi! My name is Esther, I am from Canary Islands (Spain) and I am 24 years old. The last year I finished the Pharmacist degree and in August I am starting a new life adventure, I will be an au pair couple with my boyfriend Mikel, he is from Gipuzkoa (Spain), 27 years old and he is a P.E. teacher.

I am starting this blog with the intention of helping to other people who is in the same situation than us. I will usually write in the blog, but sometimes Mikel will do it.

Everything started when we finished our degrees, the perspectives of a future job in Spain weren't so good so we decided to go to England.

But... How? Which work will we have? With a basic english level (although his english is better than mine) it won't be easy this adventure. If we were realistics we had three different options to work with a basic english level:

  • Kitchen porter: This job consists on washing dishes, glasses... in different coffee shops or pubs. You will need money for the first moments because you won't earn enough money and you will have to pay the house, food, bills, etc.

  • Hotel: Other option it was going to a hotel where you can live and work. If you are going to England by yourself I think that this one is the best option, you will earn enough money with your english level and you don't have to be worried about the bills, food... Why don't we choose this option? Because we won't have enough free time and we could be separated.
  • Au pair: So we decided to be an au pair. You will have to look after some children and doing some houseworks and they will give you a bedroom, food and pocket money. So we can go to English lessons and learning quicklier.
