Half Term y Bank Holidays / Half Term and Bank Holidays

¡Hola de nuevo! Sé que hace mucho que no actualizo pero como ya les conté iba a ser un mes muy tranquilo. 

Hoy estoy aquí para hablarles de las vacaciones y días festivos que suelen tener los ingleses. Para ello debemos tener claro dos términos:

Today I will talk about the half term and the bank holidays in England. For that, you need to know these two concepts:

 

"Half Term" es una semana de vacaciones en medio de cada trimestre, por lo que, en total son tres semanas durante un curso lectivo.

Pero en la mayoría de los colegios os encontraréis que el "half term" suele durar dos semanas. Dependiendo de cada colegio será la semana anterior o posterior al "half term", no hay ninguna regla escrita para ello. De hecho en un mismo colegio pueden cambiarlo de un año para el otro.

A continuación les pondré cuándo son las semanas oficiales de "half term" durante el curso lectivo 2014/2015:

27 Octubre - 2 Noviembre.

16 Febrero - 22 Febrero.

25 Mayo - 31 Mayo.

 

"Half Term" is a holiday week in the middle of a term, so there are three weeks during the school year.

Although that, in most schools there will be "half terms" which last two weeks. That can be the previous or later week, it depends of every school. Actually, one school can change it the next year.

Here I'll write the official dates of "half term" in the school year of 2014/2015:

27 October - 2 November.

16 February - 22 February.

25 May - 31 May.

 

Los "bank holidays" son los días festivos ingleses (la mayoría de los "bank holidays" son los lunes). 

En el pasado los "bank holidays" eran los días libres que daba el Banco de Inglaterra a sus trabajadores, de ahí ese nombre, pero actualmente estos días se han extendido a otros sectores como festivo nacional permaneciendo activos tan sólo los servicios mínimos de urgencia.

Debes tener en cuenta de que los "bank holidays" pueden variar dependiendo de dónde vivas, algunos días difieren entre Inglaterra, Irlanda del Norte, República de Irlanda y Escocia. Los días que les pondré a continuación son los correspondientes a Inglaterra (junto con Gales) durante el curso lectivo 2014/2015:

25 Diciembre      Día de Navidad.

26 Diciembre      Boxing Day.

1 Enero               Año nuevo.

3 Abril                Good Friday (Viernes de la Semana Santa).

6 Abril                Easter Monday (Lunes después de la Semana Santa).

4 Mayo               Early May Bank Holiday (Primer lunes de Mayo).

25 Mayo             Spring Bank Holiday (Último lunes de Mayo).

31 Agosto           Summer Bank Holiday (Último domingo de Agosto).

 

The bank holidays are the English non-working days (most of them are on Mondays).

In the past, the bank holidays were the free days of the bankers, but now they are the national holiday days, except for the emergency services.

You need to have in mind that the bank holidays can change wherever you live, some days are different for England, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland and Scotland. Here I'll write the bank holidays in England (with Wales indeed) in this school year (2014/2015):

25 December      Christmas's Day.

26 December      Boxing Day.

1 January           New Year's Day.

3 April                Good Friday (Friday of Easter week).

6 April                Easter Monday (Monday after Easter week).

4 May                 Early May Bank Holiday (First Monday in May).

25 May               Spring Bank Holiday (Last Monday in May).

31 August          Summer Bank Holiday (Last Sunday in August).

 

Además de estos días, también tienen vacaciones durante Navidad, Semana Santa y verano, pero eso ya es más parecido a cómo ocurre en España.

Cuando uno llega aquí y le empiezan a hablar de "half term" y "bank holidays" uno se siente muy perdido, así que espero que esta entrada les haya servido de ayuda ;)

  

Furthermore, they have holidays at Christmas, Easter and Summer, but these holidays are more similar to the Spanish holidays.
