¿Ya hablarás inglés perfectamente, no? (1ª parte) / Do you already speak English perfectly, don't you? (1st part)

Creo que todas las que somos au pairs habremos escuchado alguna vez esta frase de familiares, amigos… Por lo menos yo conozco a muchas de ellas que se sienten muy agobiadas cuando alguien le pregunta ¿Ya hablarás inglés perfectamente, no? Tengo la suerte de que a mí todavía no me lo han preguntado pero sé que en la cena de navidad algún familiar lo dirá o algún amigo cuando quedemos.

A toda esa gente que se cree que hablamos inglés perfectamente, siento decirles que no es así, que aprender inglés es un proceso lento y constante. Que sí, que entendemos lo que nos dicen (por lo menos el 80% de las palabras) y que nos hacemos entender, pero eso no quiere decir que seamos unos nuevos ingleses.

Hemos avanzado mucho en el tiempo que estamos aquí (aunque viéndolo por uno mismo no parece así) pero todavía nos queda muchísimo para entender todo al 100%. Los niños pequeños requieren de años y años para hablar correctamente una lengua y lo mismo nos pasa a todos nosotros (y no olvidemos que un niño tiene mayor capacidad de aprendizaje en sus primeros años de vida).

Así que si eres au pair y te sientes agobiada cuando toda tu familia siente que ya debes hablar inglés perfectamente, tranquila, no eres la única que se siente así.

 

I think that all au pairs have listened this sentence from their family, friends... I know some au pairs who are stressful when someone asks them "Do you already speak English perfectly, don't you?". By now I have been lucky, but I know that someone will ask me in the Christmas Eve.

I'm sorry to say you that we don't speak English perfectly, because learning English is a long and slow process. Yes, we can understand most of the things (about 80%) and we can be understood by the other people, but that doesn't mind that we are like English people.  

We have progressed in all this time (although you don't realise about that) but we need more time to understand everything 100%. Children need lots of years to speak a language perfectly and it happens the same with us (and don't forget that a child has more ability to learn in the first years).

So, if you are an au pair and you are feeling stressful with all your family asking about the English, keep calm, you aren't the only one.

 

    

Una cosa muy curiosa que nos pasa a todos una vez estamos en UK es que no vemos mejoría en el idioma. En mi caso si me he dado cuenta de que ya no hablo en plan indio "Hola, nombre, Esther, edad, 24", sino que ahora ya hago frases al hablar y que tengo un poco más de vocabulario, pero nada más de mejoría. Aunque Mikel me diga que sí, que ha visto como he mejorado bastante, yo sigo sin verlo. 

Pero parece ser que sí, que he mejorado, porque....¡en clases me suben de nivel!

Como ya saben yo estaba preparándome para el PET (B1) y Mikel para el FCE (B2). Y para que pueda trabajar como farmacéutica en UK necesito el CAE, que es el siguiente título al FCE. ¡¡Así que ya estoy un poquito más cerca de conseguirlo!!

 

A really curious thing which happens to everyone when we are in the UK is that we don't realise about the improvement in the language. I have realised because I don't speak like an American Indian any more "Hello, name, Esther, age, 24", now I can speak long sentences and I have more vocabulary, but that's the only thing that I realise. Although Mikel says that I have made a big progress...

And it seems that I have progressed because the teacher is going to change me to the next level!

As you already know I was studying for the PET (B1) and Mikel for the FCE (B2). And I need the CAE if I want to work as a pharmacist in the UK, which is the next level to the FCE. So now I am a little bit closer to achieve it!!

 

A principios de Diciembre había un examen pero a pesar de que no me veía capaz de aprobarlo (porque en clases todavía no se había enfocado cómo serían los examenes) le pregunté a la profesora sobre un test que hicimos a principio de curso para ver cuál era nuestro nivel dentro del PET. Ya que en clases no he aprendido nada nuevo de gramática, sólo vocabulario. 

Ella lo miró junto con la profesora de Mikel y dijeron que creían que no estaba preparada, que quizás en el simulacro de examen que hay en Febrero me podían cambiar de clase y que en Junio la mejor opción sería que me presentara a los dos examenes (PET y FCE) por si no aprobaba el FCE.

Así que a partir de ese día me compré uno de los mejores libros que hay para aprender inglés (por si estás interesado es el "English Grammar in Use" de la Universidad de Cambridge) y cogí los apuntes de Mikel y he estado estudiando casi todos los días, para que cuando me cambiaran de nivel no estar atrasada.

 

On early December there was an exam and I didn't feel ready to take it because in the lessons we haven't talked about how the exams are, but anyway I asked to the teacher about the level test which we took in the beginning of the lessons because I haven't learnt anything new.

She checked the test with Mikel's teacher and they told me that I wasn't ready, that maybe I could change the lessons when we will take the mock exam in February, but they recommended me taking both exams in June (PET and FCE).

Since then, I bought one of the best books for learning English (if you are interested the book is "English Grammar in Use" of Cambridge University) and I took Mikel's notes and I have been studying almost every day, so when they will change me the level, I will be ready.

 

Pero el martes pasado Mikel preguntó a su profesora si alguien del PET iba a subir al FCE. Ella le comentó que no porque no tenían un nivel suficiente y le preguntó si era porque conocía a alguien. Entonces Mikel le estuvo hablando de mí, de cómo hacía sus ejercicios y estudiaba de sus apuntes e incluso como estudiaba más que él, pero ahí se quedó la cosa.

Pues el jueves, mientras estaba en clase, mi profesora se acercó a mí y me dijo que me iba a hacer un examen para ver si me subían de nivel. Yo me quedé en shock, porque se suponía que habíamos quedado en que no. Y tras hacerlo me dijo que sí, que si tenía el nivel suficiente, que sólo tenía que mejorar el "speaking" porque de "listening" voy bien.

Así que el propósito para el próximo año es hablar en inglés con Mikel. Ya lo hemos intentado en ocasiones pero es muy duro estar con alguien español y tener que seguir hablando en inglés, pero todo sea por nuestro bien.

Aunque me cambie de nivel antes de lo esperado tengo la intención de presentarme al examen del PET también, para por lo menos tener un título de inglés en caso de que no apruebe el FCE.

 

Last tuesday Mikel asked his teacher if someone of the PET level was going to go to the FCE, but she told him that anyone hasn't enough English level for that and she asked Mikel if he knew someone, so they were talking about me, how I was studying on my own, studying his notes and he told her that I was studying more than him.

Next thursday, while I was in the lessons, my teacher came to me and asked me to take an exam to know if I could change the level. I was shocked, because they had told me that I couldn't do it! When I finished, she corrected it and told me that I was able to change! I only needed to improve my speaking.

So the New Year's resolution is to speak in English with Mikel. We have already tried but it's really hard to be with a Spanish person and to speak in other language all the time...

Although I am going to change the level I want to take both exams in June, just in case that I won't pass the FCE.

 

Estoy muy contenta por esto, es un paso más hacia mi futuro como farmacéutica en UK. Pero eso no quita que una parte de mí esté triste, porque me encantaba mi clase, la profesora era genial (un poco loca, pero de esa clase de locura buena) y mis compañeros. Todavía me queda un último día con ellos, con lunch de Navidad y amigo invisible incluido (que aquí se conoce como "Secret Santa") =)

  

I am really happy because it's one more step to my future as an pharmacist in the UK. Although I am sad as well, because I loved my class, the teacher was great and my classmates. I have one day more with them, it will be the Christmas lunch and the Secret Santa =)
