Canterbury y Dover / Canterbury and Dover

Hacía mucho tiempo que no hacíamos turismo, así que el domingo fuimos a Canterbury y Dover, sitios que teníamos pendientes desde principios de año, con nuestras amigas au pairs.

La ciudad de Canterbury se encuentra en el condado de Kent, al sureste de Inglaterra y fue muy importante para la religión inglesa, ya que fue donde asesinaron a su Arzobispo Thomas Becket a manos de los enviados por el rey Enrique II. Y en 1988 fue nombrada Patrimonio de la Humanidad.

La atracción turística principal es la Catedral de Canterbury (para entrar debes pagar 10,50 libras) y para llegar a la catedral deberás pasar por un gran arco llamado Christ Church Gate. Lo que nosotros hicimos fue coger un tour por 7 libras de unos 90 minutos, donde te iban explicando la historia de la ciudad y, supuestamente, entrabas en la catedral; pero esto no fue del todo cierto porque sí, entramos en el recinto de la catedral y la bordeamos, pero no entramos dentro, con lo cual nos quedamos un poco decepcionados porque el tour al ser en inglés era aburrido (te cansas de escuchar tanta historia en otro idioma), así que si algún día volvemos a Canterbury tendremos que entrar dentro de la Catedral y ver su cripta y el sepulcro del príncipe negro.

 

It was a long time ago that we didn´t go for tourism, so on Sunday we went to Canterbury and Dover, some places that we wanted to go since beginning of this year, with our au pair friends.

The city of Canterbury is in the county of Kent, in the southeast of England and it was very important for the English religion because it was where happened the Thomas Becket's murder (an archbishop) from people hired by Henry II. In 1988 this city was considered like a World Heritage.

The main tourist attration is the Canterbury Cathedral (the tickets cost 10,50 pounds) and if you want to go to the catedral you have to pass throught the Christ Church Gate. We paid for a tour which is 7 pounds, this tour lasts 90 minutes and they explain you everything about the history of the city, and it is supposed that you go to the cathedral, but we didn't see it inside, we were only around it, so we were a little bit dissapointed because we wanted to go into the cathedral and we were tired because we have been listening all the time the history in English, so if we come back to Canterbury we have to go into the Cathedral and see the Crypt and the tomb of the Black Prince.

Otra de las atracciones turísticas que puedes encontrar son "Canterbury Tales", que es como un pequeño teatro dentro de una iglesia antigua donde te va contando la historia de esta ciudad basada en "Los Cuentos de Canterbury" de Geoffrey Chaucer. A esto no entramos porque también tienes que pagar y le dimos prioridad a la Catedral.

Después estuvimos dando una vuelta por la ciudad, recorriendo sus calles medievales como Mercery Lane y observando las antiguas fachadas de las casas, por aquí les dejo algunas fotos de la ciudad:

 

Another tourist attraction is the "Canterbury Tales", which is a small performance in an old church. They will tell you the history of this city, but this history will be based  on "The Canterbury Tales" by Geoffrey Chaucer. We didn't go because you have to pay and we prefered to go to the Cathedral.

Later we went around the city, passing through its medieval streets like Mercery Lane and looking at the old fronts of the houses. Here you have some pictures od the city:

Cuando terminamos en Canterbury nos dirigimos hacia Dover, quizás les suene si les digo que aquí es desde donde salen los ferrys hacia Francia. Y a unos 20 minutos se encuentra Folkestone, donde está el famoso Eurotunnel que va hacia Francia. Una cosa curiosa que nos enteramos el otro día es que en el Eurotunnel no vas conduciendo sino que los coches se meten dentro de un tren, por lo que tienes que pagar para cruzarlo.

Nuestra primera parada fue los "White Cliffs of Dover", unos acantilados impresionantes que puedes recorrerlos desde la cima. Para aparcar debes pagar 3,50 libras y una vez allí puedes hacer dos caminos diferentes, el corto que lleva hasta el mirador, dura unos 20 minutos, o el largo que llega hasta el faro, que dura unos 50 minutos. Nosotros empezamos por el corto y seguimos después hacia el largo, pero no hasta el final. Las vistas son increíbles, la pena es que fuimos en un día nublado, porque dicen que si está despejado puedes llegar a ver la costa francesa.

La anécdota del día fue cuando una de nuestras amigas dejó el paraguas que le habíamos prestado en el suelo para salir en una foto y salió volando!! Y se quedó atascado en la pared del acantilado y a la vuelta cuando pasamos por el nivel inferior vimos que el paraguas seguía allí arriba colgado xD

 

When we finished in Canterbury, we went to Dover, maybe this noun sounds familiar to you because it's the place where the boats go to France. And Folkestone, which is 20 minutes from Dover, is where the famous eurotunnel is. The other day one friend told us one curious thing and it's that you can't drive in the eurotunnel, you have to put your car into the train, so you have to pay to go by this tunnel.

Our first stop was in the "White Cliffs of Dover", some amazing cliffs where you can walk at the top of them. If you want to park you have to pay 3,50 pounds and once you are there you can choose between two ways: the short way until the viewpoint (20 minutes) or the long way which go until the lighthouse (50 minutes). We started in the short one and then we continued by the long one, but we didn't go until the end. The views are amazing, the shame was that the day was cloudy because the people say that you can see France in a sunny day.

The day anectode was when one of our friend left the umbrella, which we let her, on the floor so she can be in the picture but the umbrella started to fly!! But it get stucked on the cliff, and when we came back to the car we saw that the umbrella was still there xD

Y, por último, nos dirigimos hacia la ciudad de Dover pero no había nada en especial así que dimos una vuelta por allí y volvimos a casa después de un largo día.

 

Finally we went to the city of Dover but there wasn't any special thing, so we went around and we decided to go home.
